Important December Meeting Information

Christmas is upon us and our lives become busy with holiday festivities, shopping and all the little things we do in preparation of celebrating Christmas. This has been an unusually hectic year for many of us so when our speakers had to reschedule because of conflicts we decided to give everyone the month of December off from our monthly meeting to rest up because 2018 is going to be a busy, busy year.

Governor Fallin has called for a second special session to begin December 18, after vetoing the budget "fix" she agreed to during the first special session to fix the cigarette tax, passed by the legislature in the final week of session and ruled unconstitutional by the Oklahoma Supreme Court. Calling for the second special session the week before Christmas is a bully move by the governor to try to strong-arm the legislature to raise taxes. We must remain vigilant and stand with legislators that demand accountability and transparency in the budget process, who are demanding audits before the consideration of raising taxes on the good citizens of Oklahoma.

Elections in 2018 will be fast and furious with candidates vying for your support. State-wide races are happening from Governor, Lt Governor, State Treasurer, State Auditor, Labor Commissioner to Corporation Commissioner, all U.S. Representatives, Oklahoma State Representatives, at least half of the State Senators as well as County seats (County Commissioner, Treasurer, Assessor, District Attorney). Filing for office is April 11-13, 2018. Primary vote is June 26, 2018, the Runoff is August 3 and the General election is November 6, 2018.

Tulsa 9.12 is currently working with OCPA and AFP to present the Growth and Opportunity Summit in early 2018. It will be a day focused on our state budget, the Oklahoma Constitution as well as break-out sessions offering grassroots training in areas like candidate training, social media training, citizen activism, and more. Watch for upcoming details.

Enjoy your time off this Christmas season. Be well rested for 2018 because it is going to be a whirlwind year.

Merry Christmas from the board and members of Tulsa 9.12!!
